In Praise of the Blind Man’s Stick: Defending embodied design practices through an exploration of the white cane’s evolution

Phenomenology has long emphasized the centrality of the lived body in shaping subjective experience, yet Post-Phenomenological design theory often maintains a predominantly mental focus. This essay examines the role of embodied experience in design practice through the case of assistive technologies, particularly the white cane. By revisiting (Post) Phenomenological frameworks and tracing the evolution of the white cane, it argues for design approaches that recognize the lived body as central to effective human–technology interaction.
