Lost in Translation: the lived body and the lived experience in Soma Design
Exploring theory-practice gaps in embodied design approaches
Over the past two decades, embodied cognition has become influential in design academia, integrating phenomenological concepts such as the lived body and lived experience into design theory. This paper examines two approaches—Soma Design and the Design for Embodied Being-in-the-World framework—and analyzes how embodied theory translates into practice. It argues that despite a strong theoretical foundation, embodied design reveals persistent theory–practice gaps and a largely dualistic perspective on experience.
