Designing technologies for older age well-being
Relatedness and smart metaphors to regulate and track collective mood

Emerging smart technologies increasingly support mood tracking and regulation, yet usability challenges limit their adoption among older adults. This thesis proposes a new approach that shifts from individual devices to collective, environment-based solutions. The proposed design introduces a smart bench that responds to older adults’ social and environmental engagement through blooming kinetic flowers. By encouraging interaction with others and the surroundings, the bench nudges users toward mood regulation strategies, while the kinetic flowers provide an inclusive and non-intrusive tracking method.
